About Your Teacher
Hello...I'm Mr. Bourgeois, or Mr. B, as most students tend to refer to me. I am a Career & Technical Education (CTE) teacher at Chapel Hill High School. Before coming to Chapel Hill for the 2022-23 school year, I taught at Durham School of the Arts for 19 years. While there, I serve as the school's CTE department chair and led their arts pathway in Game Design teaching Digital Design & Animation, Digital Design & Animation II, Game Art & Design, and Advanced Game Art & Design.
Prior to teaching, I was employed by a small, nonprofit research organization. I managed their network, created custom applications using Visual Basic, and built databases as well as conducted scientific research. I served in the U.S. Air Force where I was stationed at Ramstein AB in Germany as an F-16 Avionics Specialist. I completed my Bachelor of Arts at Franklin Pierce College (now University) in Rindge, NH and earned a Master of Arts degree in education from East Carolina University.
One of the highlights of my career was to lead a team of highly motivated and advanced students in developing a virtual reality experience using the abandoned Wagram Correctional Facility for a blueprint to meet the needs of a real-world client, Growing Change, a nonprofit organization located in Laurinburg, NC. This organization was looking to convert the facility into a community area with gardens and other public spaces. It also allowed students to work with a local virtual reality company in Durham, Lucid Dream and Duke University. This project led to me assisting Luminary Labs with reviewing applicant projects as well as assisting to mentor finalists in the EdSim Challenge for the U.S. Department of Education in 2017.
Outside of school, I am married and have two grown children plus a granddaughter. Our daughter graduated from Durham School of the Arts in 2009, attended the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham and is employed locally as a graphic designer. Our son attended Randolph Community College where he studied photography and worked for several years as an assistant photographer in High Point. I guess you can say digital art runs deep in our family!
